Sometimes the simplest solutions are always worth trying first...

1) Is there something unplugged? Ethernet cables shouldn't come loose, but if they are missing the clip, this is possible. If you see a red cross through your network connection icon, this means you won't be able to sign in because your PC is not connected to the network. The image below will show in the bottom right corner of your display if you are connected.

2) Are you using the correct password? Caps Lock could be on... Have you changed your password recently? Your password may even have expired if you haven't changed it for a long time.
