Frequently Asked Question

Using the VPN
Last Updated 2 years ago

Now you have set up your new laptop, you need to connect to your office PC. This is very similar to the method we have used before, but this does not involve a separate app, since the VPN is already configured in Windows.

You may want to set up your second monitor before connecting to the VPN and your office PC

In your system tray, open the network connections (usually a Wi-Fi icon), make sure you're connected to a network.

You must set up eduroam on the laptop if you want to use it in College.

Select the Murray Edwards VPN connection - you'll need your phone handy for Multi Factor Authentications (MFA) in order to sign into the VPN.

For the next stage, you will need to know the IP Address for your office PC. Open a ticket under 2. Desktop Services / Office PCs to request your IP Address from us if it's not included in the setup documentation provided with the laptop.

Important: Your IP Address is considered personal information, do not divulge it to anyone. You should keep this secret in the same way you would not post publicly about your mother's maiden name or first pet's name on Facebook.

Open the Windows Remote Desktop Connection app using the search function

Enter your IP Address as Computer and email address as Username.

Enter your office PC login password

Accept the certificate - you can choose to always accept it if you wish.

(that's a Yes)

The app will then open a screen view of your office PC. You can move your office PC Remote Desktop to your additional monitor, leaving the Baby Acer open for Teams to be used from this desktop.

Top Tip: Teams will still work through the VPN, but it will show the empty chair in your office if you attempt this!
