Frequently Asked Question
When you open the laptop for the first time, you activate the 'Out of Box Experience', which means you have to tell the laptop how you want to install Windows. You'll need a good stable Internet connection, WiFi is fine, as long as your home connection is stable.
If you are setting up in College, we strongly suggest you use the wired connection in the IT Office to follow these instructions. If you would prefer to go it alone, you should use eduroam or UniOfCam-Guest as the WiFi network for this process (if you are new to the University, you may not know your login for this). Remember to have your phone ready authenticate using MFA during the setup procedure.
When you finish the initial setup, you need to set up eduroam on this laptop to make it usable in College.
Turn the laptop on. We'd suggest you also plug in the power supply as the process takes some time and running out of battery is something we want to avoid!
There will be some waiting time in between some of these steps, but nothing takes longer than a few minutes. Don't turn off the laptop at any point because you think it's crashed.
If you think it has crashed, wait 15 minutes and then call 01223 762496
Go through the basic start-up screens. The correct selections in this sequence should be obvious.
You don't need a second keyboard layout, so Skip
You'll now need to sign into a network to set the laptop up with your account. UniOfCam-Guest is what we'd suggest when setting up in College. If you're at home, select your home WiFi network, if you don't know the password, it's usually written on the back of your router somewhere.

The laptop may take several hours to install all the features we have already set up. Leave it plugged in and open so it can run what it needs to. This installation comes to the computer from the Internet, so make sure your connection is stable. If you're at home, you can plug the laptop into your router with an Ethernet cable if you have one, the port is on the left side of the laptop.
